The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has reached epidemic proportions in the western world and is rising in emerging economies and resource poor countries too. Chronic kidney disease is directly, or as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases is a growing economic burden to health systems. Strategies are now available to slow down or stop the progression of chronic kidney disease.
